English - Writing

At St Peter’s we aim to create an environment where pupils can develop a love for writing and are able to express their thoughts and ideas clearly and creatively through the written word. We aim to develop confident, fluent and enthusiastic writers.  Writing is delivered in a cross-curricular manner using our curriculum as the stimulus.  This takes place alongside daily basic skills sessions (which focus on handwriting, spelling and phonics) as well as discreet teaching of ‘Grammar, Punctuation and Spelling’ (GPS) content. Children are taught writing in a creative way using a cross-curricular ‘Learning journey’ approach; this allows English lessons to be linked to their current topic. Information about the topics covered are detailed on the specific year group overviews.

We ensure pupils re-read, edit and improve their own writing by acquiring a range of strategies. This helps our pupils to be able to write and spell at age appropriate levels and following age-related expectations. Our pupils will develop an understanding of grammar and punctuation and learn to use it accurately and for effect. In addition to this, they will acquire a wide vocabulary to use appropriately within their writing.

They will confidently write for a variety of purposes and audiences; clearly, accurately and coherently, adapting their language and style as required.

Our aim is that all pupils  have high expectations and take pride in their work.
